Comparison between Planetary Lead Screws and Roller Lead Screws
To ensure that Lim-Tec’s planetary lead screws consistently maintain cutting-edge technology, we have established a highly qualified R&D team and integrated advanced software and technologies into our production, quality control, and testing processes. Through continuous optimization of both our products and manufacturing processes, Lim-Tec’s planetary lead screws have become reliable, cost‑effective, and highly practical solutions in the market. Our production and quality management systems are rigorously aligned with ISO certification and the EU EN aerospace standards. The exceptional quality of Lim-Tec’s products has earned widespread acclaim and strong endorsements from numerous high‑end customers. Furthermore, with a comprehensive global network, we can provide support to customers anywhere in the world through our local subsidiaries or authorized distributors.
Planetary roller screws and ball screws share a similar structure, with the key difference being that planetary roller screws use threaded rollers as the load‑carrying elements, rather than balls. Our primary advantage lies in the large number of contact points that support the load.
By load and lifespan
The advantage of star‑type roller screws over ball screws lies in their ability to deliver higher rated dynamic and static loads. By replacing balls with threaded rollers, the load is distributed across numerous contact points, enabling rapid load relief and resulting in superior shock‑resistance.
Velocity and Acceleration
Planetary roller screws can deliver higher rotational speeds and greater acceleration. In the RV series, the planetary roller screw features a non-circulating roller design, enabling a rotational speed twice that of ball screws and an acceleration of up to 3g.
Lead and Pitch
The lead of a planetary roller screw can be made smaller than that of a ball screw. Since the lead is a function of the pitch of the planetary roller screw, it can be less than 0.5 mm or even smaller. The lead of a planetary roller screw can be designed and calculated as an integer or a decimal value (e.g., 3.32 mm per revolution), eliminating the need for a reduction gear to achieve the desired ratio. Changes in the lead do not result in any alterations to the geometric dimensions of the screw shaft or the nut. In contrast, the lead of a ball screw is constrained by the diameter of the balls, so it must conform to standard values.
Stiffness and strength
The numerous contact points of the planetary roller screw significantly enhance its stiffness and impact resistance.

Product Features:
A planetary roller screw is a mechanism that converts rotary motion into linear motion, with rolling elements positioned between the nut and the screw.
As a threaded roller, the large number of contact points gives the planetary roller screw an exceptionally high load-carrying capacity.
Planetary roller screws are classified into: non-circulating roller type (LM series) and circulating roller type (LMR series).
Lead accuracy grades range from G1 to G9. Reverse‑turning planetary roller screws (LMI series) are also available.
